The Great Destroyer

I will start with the cover. I mean just look at how lovely it is. I guess you’d be tempted to buy this book just by giving it a glance. I always loved these strong colors which go so well with the fractal effect the artist created here. I would have liked to have a face on the guy there, who is Simon I presume? Ftom this you can tell that the story circles mostly around Clary and Simon, but it’s not totally true. You can guess that Jace has a major role in it after reading the description.After reading the first chapter I could tell that Simon has a big role in this book. Even though he tries to be funny, but fails miserably, I still can’t get to hate him. The whole vamp transformation worked for our favorite geek pretty well. I mean dating two hot girls at the same time… gotta respect that, right? The beginning of the book works around the whole vampire crap that doesn’t seem so appealing to me anymore in Young Adult (YA – remember it) books. Maybe it’s my mood, or their lack of danger. Either way I’m trying to avowing YA vamp books. Anyways, back to the problem at hand. I thought the book had a too slow start. I mean the ending was awesome, some twist of events that left me staring at my Kindle even after I was finished reading. Top notch, that. But come on! Why not have a great story since the beginning? Maybe I’m too harsh with this but considering the previous books you kind of have higher expectations for the coming ones. It’s pure logic. That’s why I won’t end up giving it such a good score.I hate giving details about the story. Hate spoilers even more. So this is just narrow comments to give you a general idea about this. If you want to know the big picture about the book, read the description. No use rewriting everything, don’t you think? I’m picking on this because I saw many reviewers doing just that. I have to admit that I don’t like it. I prefer personal opinions over rewriting the already existing description.Now to comment a bit about the characters. I just mentioned Simon above so I guess I’m done with him. Nothing more to add there. We have a new dude in this book, Kyle. I loved him since the start, mainly because he resembles Jace so much minus the sky-high arrogance. Clary still didn’t get as mature and strong as I would have expected her to. Now she’s all proud of training to become a Shadowhunter but I just don’t see her tough enough to become one. She’s too much of a weakling to ever succeed. Or maybe she’ll just drink a magic potion or something and will become a sexy lil’ Hulk-girl. I don’t know… It may happen… Jace. Oh yeah my biggest problem of this book. After finishing City of Glass (TMI 3) I was expecting him to get over the drama and just be normal and loving to Clary. But noooooooooooo. The tragedy has to continue. You just find him acting like a drama-queen and being an ass to the poor girl for no apparent reason. I mean think about how much he fought for her and now he gives up so easily. Is this insecurity? Does he really love her? Is he in love with an alien from another Universe? Stay tuned for another episode of Masochist Angels, where young people like pain as much as they like drugs.So the verdict? Good story but only at the end, frustrating characters aaand…. Not even a quote that I loved. That’s actually sad. The Anzu loves them quotes. Not a good score, so you can imagine how disappointed I am. Hopefully the next one will be better.
